1) Anti-inflammatory- Controlling chronic inflammation is critical because it is now known to be a major causative factor in the development of chronic illness, including: type II diabetes, arthritis, cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and autoimmune disorders. Study after study has shown that turmeric curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.

2) Antioxidant- Antioxidants are molecules that prevent the oxidation of other molecules. This is important because when a molecule is oxidized it releases free radicals that can lead to cellular damage. This process of free radical induced cellular damage is believed to be a major contributing factor in the development of numerous chronic and age related diseases. Many research studies in the conventional medical literature document that curcumin is a potent antioxidant. A 2015 study in Molecules notes that “the antioxidant properties of curcumin can play a key role in the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation diseases.”3

3) Antifungal- Fungal infections, typically Candida, are a huge problem, especially in immunocompromised and chronically ill patients. Thankfully, curcumin has been found to be a strong antifungal agent. A 2015 article in the European Journal of Pharmacology documents that curcumin has been found to be a potent antifungal agent against five different genera of fungi, including: “Candida, Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, Trichosporon and Paracoccidioides.”4

4) Anticancer- Cancer has been devastating our society and our “war on cancer” has been failing miserably. 5) Antiviral- Curcumin has been documented to have strong antiviral properties. Studies have found that curcumin shows great promise in being used to help treat various viral diseases, including: HIV, hepatitis C, ebola, RSV, and other viruses. To give you an example of some of the research being done, a 2015 article in Food and Function states that curcumin “can be used for the treatment of several diseases including HIV-AIDS because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, and antibacterial nature.”9 Once again the amazing properties of turmeric curcumin are noted!

6) Antibacterial- Numerous studies have documented the antibacterial effects of turmeric curcumin against a variety of bacteria, including the antibiotic resistant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). If you have ever worked in a hospital you are well aware that drug resistant bacterial infections are a HUGE problem and sometimes fatal. The most common bacterial culprit is MRSA. The difficulty in treating MRSA is that it often does not respond to antibiotics. The good news is that researchers at Wonkwang University discovered that when curcumin is given along with specific antibiotics used to treat MRSA the antibiotics become effective at lower doses.10  Curcumin has even been found to be effective against bacteria that cause periodontal disease. In a 2016 article in the Journal of Periodontology researchers document that curcumin is very effective against a variety of periodontopathic bacteria (bacteria responsible for periodontal disease).11

7) Anti-Allergy- A 2015 animal study showed that turmeric is very effective in reducing food allergy symptoms. Turmeric was able to significantly reduce rectal temperate, anaphylactic response, and allergic immune response. The authors of the study remark in the conclusion that turmeric shows promise in being used to reduce “allergic disorders such as food allergy, atopic dermatitis, and asthma.”12

8) Improves Memory- A randomized double blind study found that turmeric can increase the working memory of pre-diabetic patients.13

15) Pain Reliever- Multiple studies have shown that turmeric curcumin is a powerful pain reliever.24,25 A great example is a 2014 study that evaluated treating knee osteoarthritis pain with ibuprofen or curcumin extract. The study had 367 patients with osteoarthritis pain. 185 patients received curcumin extract and 182 ibuprofen. The researchers found that curcumin extract was as effective as ibuprofen in treating knee pain AND was easier on the gut.26
