Top 10 Collagen Benefits

Collagen Powder BenefitsCollagen supplements are quickly becoming recognized as a powerful superfood with a wide variety of health benefits.  In our opinion, here are the top 10 collagen benefits:

1. Joint Health- Collagen has been shown to be remarkable at improving joint health. A profound study evaluating collagen supplementation with respect to activity related joint pain was done at Penn State University. The study was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind study with 147 study participants. The participants were divided into two groups. One group received 10g of collagen hydrolysate and the other group received a placebo for 24 weeks. The results for the group taking collagen were remarkable. They were found to have reduced joint pain at rest, reduced joint pain when standing, reduced joint pain when carrying objects, reduced joint pain when walking, and reduced joint pain when lifting. Even more impressive is that for the participants that had knee arthralgia (pain) the results were even more pronounced. This study shows that collagen supplements show incredible promise as a joint health promoting supplement.

2. Muscle Health- Collagen has been shown to help promote optimal muscle health. A 2015 randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind study evaluated the effects of collagen supplementation on muscle health. In the study 53 elderly males with sarcopenia (muscle loss with age) were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of resistance training and were supplemented with collagen peptides or a placebo. The group that took collagen peptides had a “significantly more pronounced” fat-free mass (lean body mass) and muscle strength (measured as Isokinetic quadriceps strength) compared to the group that took placebo.  On top of that, the group receiving collagen had a more pronounced decreased fat mass. These results help show that collagen supplementation is of tremendous benefit to improving muscle mass, strength, and health.

3. Youthful Skin- Beautiful youthful skin is an essential component of beauty. A placebo-controlled, double blind study evaluated the effects of supplementation using a specific bioactive collagen peptide on eye wrinkle formation and dermal matrix synthesis. In the study 114 women were randomly assigned to receive 2.5g of bioactive collagen peptide or placebo once daily for 8 weeks. The study found that the women receiving collagen daily had reduced skin wrinkles and increased procollagen type I and elastin.3

4. Cellulite Reduction- In a 2015 double-blind, placebo-controlled study 105 women were randomly assigned to receive 2.5g of specific bioactive collagen peptide or placebo once daily for 6 months. The study found that the women taking specific bioactive collagen peptide had a “significant decrease in the degree of cellulite,” in addition to reduced skin waviness.4

5. Strengthens Bones- Countless people suffer from osteoporosis, leading to weak frail bones that are prone to fracture. One way that shows great promise in helping people with osteoporosis is collagen supplementation. An animal study found that a diet containing hydrolyzed collagen resulted in a “significant increase in bone strength.” Results from another study showed that collagen supplementation (with calcium and vitamin D) was able to help reduce bone loss in women with osteopenia (reduced bone density). These results come as no surprise given that collagen accounts for 90% of the matrix proteins in bone.5,6,7

6. Hair Health- Collagen is packed full of amino acids essential for hair growth, nutrition, and health. Taking a collagen supplement helps provide your body the nutrients it needs for optimal full youthful hair.

7. Detoxification- Everyday our bodies are subjected to a plethora of toxins from the environment, food, and a number of other sources. Thankfully the human body has a wide spectrum of strategies to cleanse itself from the various daily insults. The primary detoxification organ in the body is the liver, which has an incredible ability to process and eliminate toxins from the blood. Taking a collagen supplement helps provide the liver the needed nutrients for optimal detoxification.

8. Mental Health- Collagen contains a tremendous amount of glycine. Glycine is widely considered one of the most important inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Having ideal glycine levels in your body is believed to be critical for dealing with stress and anxiety.

9. Weight Loss- A 2009 study in Clinical Nutrition showed that compared to other sources of protein (casein, soy, and whey), collagen (gelatin) is 40% more satisfying and resulted in 20% less food intake after breakfast.8

10. Helps Leaky Gut Syndrome- Millions of people around the world are suffering with leaky gut syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by increased intestinal permeability leading to unwanted toxins, undigested food particles, and other destructive molecules being absorbed into the body. This results in a number of unpleasant symptoms, such as: bloating, fatigue, weight gain, food sensitivities, and so on. Taking a collagen supplement helps provide the body the needed nutrients to repair and fortify the intestinal lining, minimizing unwanted absorption of toxins and maximizing health.9
